August 10, 2015 - May 2, 2016: 360 Degrees: Modelling in SketchUp

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

While gratifying to see the desk dimensions rendered in Illustrator, the next design phase sparked from suggestion by a friend to use Google's SketchUp, a free 3-D modelling software.

Without any experience with this program, I studied YouTube videos by woodworkers demonstrating how Sketchup can create shapes (to exact dimensions) and reflect joinery/building techniques (e.g. dovetails and frame and panel construction).

After many iterations, I created a solid model, with exact measurements as a prototype/proof of concept.

An advantage to creating a 3-D model was the ability to "de-construct" the desk into its components and provide an "X-ray" view illustrating the joinery and internal compartments.
