On this night we began the next major phase: finishing and sealing. This multi-step process started by completely sanding the the drawer to ensure a smooth surface, free of pencil marks, scratches, or blemishes. Once sanded , an air compressor was used to blow all dust from the drawer, followed by a light pass with a dry cloth (making sure to leave no fabric pieces behind). Then, using a foam applicator brush, the first consistent layer of Minwax Helmsman Satin transparent polyurethane was evenly applied, taking great care to catch any drips which once hardened would be challenging to remove. This gradual coating would be key to keeping out moisture and protecting the wood from everyday use. Being the first coat, the wood absorbed the urethane quickly (each application would require at least 24-48 hours of drying time).
