With consoles built, we turned to our first desk top (foreshadowing); using the newly bought maple, we planed, jointed, cut, and squared each 2 inch thick maple plank and decided on the best layout aesthetically by matching the grains, colors, and character of the wood. In order to avoid cupping, we made sure to alternate the curvature of the pieces (up, down, up, down etc.) and marked the surface with a wavy line to ensure the board were properly ordered and aligned during the glue-up process.
