Learning from our challenges in attempting to router the complete tail channel in a single pass, we created a jig (consisting of a base holding the wood in place and a top pieces with walls to guide the plunge router) to rout a straight channel along the sides of both tops. This step allowed us to precisely remove a significant amount of shavings and significantly increase the ease of cutting the remaining waste using the dedicated dovetail bit.
